The majority of CCTV cameras in the Mitchells Plain town centre are not working, leading to increased crime and drug dealing in the area, according to the Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF).
This follows complaints by several stores in Cape Town's CBD that the CCTV cameras' ineffectiveness in the city centre led to shops being easy victims of armed robberies.
Forum chairperson Abraham Isaacs said six of the seven CCTV cameras in the Town Centre shopping complex had not worked for two years. They were installed three years ago as part of the urban renewal project for the area.
