TRANSPORTATION is responsible for one-fourth of global greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 75 percent of world oil production. The U.S. transportation sector alone accounts for almost 10 percent of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. (1) Insofar as it is a carrier and a storage medium for energy (unlike electricity, the other main energy carrier), hydrogen has been promoted as ideal for future transportation, and interest in it has been increasing in the last decade.
