"Dan in Real Life'' has scarcely a real moment in it. It struggles and strains to find humor and pathos in the story of a widower with three daughters who falls in love with his brother's girlfriend. But the film comes off as so sitcom-phony you've got to wonder if the filmmakers ever have seen a true-life family, never mind been a part of one.

The movie does one thing right. It proves that Steve Carell can play a character with some awareness of the world around him, a 180-degree turn from the shallow, painfully oblivious office manager Michael he plays on "The Office.'' You can watch "Dan in Real Life'' ...
