When it comes to CEO compensation, it's quite the reverse. In fact, according to a recent study by executive compensation research firm Equilar, external CEO hires enjoy a hefty 35 percent premium in total pay over their peers promoted from within and a 13.2 percent premium over CEOs with two-plus years of tenure.
