Internet access has become easier and more affordable throughout the United States, especially on college campuses; an estimated 92% of college students have computer access, (1) and approximately 86% of college students report having accessed the Internet for some purpose during their lives. (2) In a 2001 survey of 281,064 freshmen from 421 4-year colleges, 74% reported Internet use for research or homework, 19% participated in Internet chat rooms, 69% communicated via e-mail, and 58% reported use of the Internet for "other" purposes? Scherer (4) found that 73% of college students accessed the Internet at least once a day and spent approximately 8.1 hours a week online. ...
