An aluminum bronze alloy that is said to extend the life of basic oxygen furnace components by a factor of five has reportedly been developed by AmeriFab Inc., Indianapolis, Ind. The company says that aluminum bronze pipe is harder than steel, conducts heat better, and provides better elongation, making it suitable for water-cooled ductwork and BOF hoods.
Called AmeriBronze, the alloy reportedly saves more than 9.3 billion Btu per year at Republic Engineered Products Inc., which agreed to conduct a full-scale evaluation of an aluminum bronze skirt in its hot-rolled bar steel plant.
