Rugged optical fiber is 100 times more flexible.(METALS/POLYMERS/CERAMICS)(Brief article)

An optical fiber that is at least 100 times more flexible than standard fiber and as rugged as copper cable has reportedly been developed by Corning Inc., Corning, N.Y. The design relies on nanostructures that act as mirrors, so that as the fiber is turned or bent, the light is reflected inside the fiber instead of leaking out. These fundamental changes in the way light travels in the fiber enable it to be over 100 times more bendable than standard fibers, with virtually no signal loss. Current optical fiber does not carry light well ...
