As news comes of the successful installation of the new-generation ground control system, the Architecture Evolution Plan (AEP, see page 31 of this issue), we turn our attention to the next step: the GPS III Operational Control Segment (OCX). Down-select from three bidding contractors--Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumann, and Raytheon--to two is supposed to occur sometime in October.
Previously, ground control and space segment were bid and contracted for in one piece, but in 2005 the Joint Program Office, now the Air Force GPS Wing, broke the GPS III effort into separate space and control segment contracts. Lockheed continued to compete for both space and ground, ...
