Use of home-based STI self-collection and testing kits for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis is acceptable to low-income women, according to a study conducted between April and November 2004 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. (1) A total of 818 women aged 18-40 were enrolled; half were randomized to receive a kit that they could use at home to collect and test vaginal samples for trichomoniasis, whereas the other half were given appointments to come to the clinic to perform sample collection and testing with guidance from a nurse.
