Torrential rain and extensive flooding greeted the Plastics Historical Society's centenary celebrations of Bakelite in Stratford-on-Avon, UK. Nevertheless after some initial delay the day's event went ahead smoothly providing a fascinating insight into the multifaceted history of Bakelite.
The first speaker, Dr Carol Morris traced the history of cast phenolic jewellery which started in 1929/30 in the USA. Mass production enabled phenolics to capture 50-70% of the costume jewellery market by 1934.
