COUNTY cricketers have a spring in their step this week.

A great weight has lifted from them, the poor, put-upon mites.

Their jubilation stems from the England and Wales Cricket Board's announcement that, from 2008, the number of overs bowled per day in county championship matches will be trimmed from 104 to 96. From next summer, play will shrink to three two-hour sessions.

Having lobbied for a reduction for some time, the players are delighted. The change has also been warmly welcomed by workers' protectorates, human rights groups and anti-slavery organisations world-wide.
