THE ONLY PERSON ever to pen back-to-back Best Pictures (2004's Million Dollar Baby and 2005's Crash), writer and director Paul Haggis looks like he'll land another nod with In the Valley of Elah (September 14), the story of a man investigating the disappearance of his son following his return from Iraq. Plus, he writes the Bond movies. Show-off.
ESQ: How did you come to make Valley?
PH: I told my agent, "Look for anything you know will never get made." I was given Mark Boal's "Death and Dishonor" and took it to the studios. Of course, nothing happened. They weren't going to touch this. So I called Clint Eastwood.
