The success of portable navigation devices from brands such as TomTom has forced automakers and suppliers to make their embedded systems even better.
"I think automakers can provide much more attractive features than a TomTom system," Hideto Murakami, Nissan Europe senior vice president for research and development, told Automotive News Europe.
TomTom is the world's largest maker of car navigation systems.
Automakers and suppliers make a big profit on embedded systems so they do not want to lose any more ground to aftermarket providers.
