NEW YORK - Ryan Hall was ecstatic. He had just won the 2008 U.S. Olympic men's marathon trials and earned a spot in Beijing next year. And then he heard his friend had died.
Ryan Shay, a five-time national champion on the roads running in his second Olympic marathon trials, collapsed some 5 1/2 miles into the race near the Central Park boathouse. According to race officials, the 28-year-old Flagstaff, Ariz., native immediately received CPR and an ambulance transported him to nearby Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m.
