When it comes to encouraging its residents to be healthier, one city is "thinking outside the bun." The Los Angeles City Council has proposed legislation that would ban the opening of any new fast-food restaurants in southern Los Angeles. Council members plan to vote on the two-year ban this fall.

About 29 percent of children in southern Los Angeles are obese, or dangerously overweight. Many residents also suffer from ailments including diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
