STANLEY -- A lineman on the Stanley-Boyd High School football team was killed in a traffic crash hours before the team's state playoff game in Stanley Friday night, school officials said.

Coach Jeff Koenig said he announced the death of Jared Johnson to the players after their 12-7 loss to Chetek in the Level 3 playoff game.

"It was one of the hardest things I've ever done," Koenig said. "I'm glad I was the one who got to tell them because, like I said, we're a family together and try to treat each other that way."
