QUESTION: Recently, a patient arrived in our OR with head lice, and we were not sure how to handle this situation. Can you provide us with information on head lice? How are they diagnosed? How do they get transmitted? Should contact precautions be used when caring for patients with head lice? What treatment gets rid of lice?
ANSWER: Pediculosis (ie, the state of being infected with lice) used to be seen only in patients who demonstrated poor personal hygiene, lived in overcrowded environments, or lived in places where people and clothing could not be kept clean.
