Driving around the suburbs the other day, I noticed how many of our faithful companions were curled up at their gates, sleeping away the endless hours while they waited for their masters to return.
And then I wondered whether their owners' homecoming would be the joyous, loving reunion their lonely little hearts yearned for, or whether they would be shunned or screamed at to keep their distance or, worse still, lashed out at because their beloved masters had had a bad day.
And I also wondered whether their caregivers would actually remember to feed their sad, broken-hearted animals, or whether they would have to endure the pangs of hunger and another restless night, ...
