CUMBRIA County Council is spending [pounds sterling]200,000 resurfacing stretches of one of Britain's highest and most picturesque roads.
At 1,489 feet (454 m), the A592 Kirkstone Pass Road is the highest road pass in the Lake District with gradients of one in four along its winding route between the A591 near Windermere and the shores of Ullswater.
Cumbria County Council has started work on reconstructing two stretches of carriageway at the Windermere end of the Kirkstone Pass Road.
This first phase will use temporary traffic lights to keep vehicles moving but the road will have to be closed completely for this week.
