In a well documented book, Quatre Presidents et L' Afrique, the French journalist Claude Wauthier reviews France's African policy from De Gaulle to Mitterrand. Since the French President has a major say in African politics, Africans cannot remain indifferent to the implications of the election of Jacques Chirac. The question is whether his policies will differ radically from those of his predecessors. As such this history of Africa's relations with the previous four French Presidents could not have come at a more timely moment.
