We were disappointed and frustrated to read the article "Nursing jobs axed in Otago" in the October issue of Kai Tiaki Nursing New Zealand (p8). NZNO professional nurse adviser Susanne Trim correctly identified and outlined the issues that may occur if the clinical nurse educator (CNE) roles were disestablished.
It seems the lessons of the past have not been learned. The Canterbury experience, detailed in the Stent Report of the early 1990s, illustrated the devastating impact on patient care when nursing leadership and support were removed from nurses providing direct patient care and hospital staff. (1)
