A FORMER sheepdog champion almost died after being stabbed in the face in a row over a Cocker Spaniel.
Dennis Smith was attacked at his home in Yarrowford at the new year - and one strike from a large kitchen knife left a life-threatening wound on his tongue.
The 47-year-old was saved by emergency treatment at the Borders General Hospital, but another cut to his face has left him scarred for life.
Attacker 31-year-old Ryan Rees lashed out with a nine-inch-bladed knife after knocking on his victim's door.
Rees - of Anderson Road in Hawick - was originally charged with attempted murder.
