Millions of Americans are afflicted with fever blisters or canker sores. In fact, 45% to 80% of American adults have had at least one bout with fever blisters, and about 20% of Americans are susceptible to recurring canker sores, according to the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus. The blisters usually occur at the edge of the lip or nostril, but can show up on the chin, cheeks, and inside the mouth. When these sores are present it is very easy to transmit the virus from one person to another.
