The last decade has seen an explosion in the application of natural abundance analyses of stable isotope ratios to address research problems over a broad range of ecological studies. Such isotope techniques, once the realm of geochemists or specialized analytical chemists and largely unavailable to ecologists, are now becoming common tools in formulating sophisticated questions on the structure and function of ecological and environmental systems.
