CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- To say Victor Atherton is happy would be an understatement.
"Our energy consumption is down nearly 30% since 1989," said the vice president for facilities administration at the University of Miami here. "And we're air conditioning more buildings than ever."
The reason for the dramatic improvement? Atherton points to a new chilled-water loop system that is being installed to cool classrooms, dormitories, and other facilities on the expanding UM campus.
