A. Gettysburg wasn't intended to be the major battleground that it turned out to be. The Confederate army's Gen. Robert E. Lee had decided to invade the North. It was thought that if the South could win a victory on Union soil, it would get support from England. As southern forces advanced, the North wanted to foil the South's communications. The two sides met near Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Union army had about 90,000 people; the Confederates fought with about 75,000. The battle lasted three days, and at its end, 51,000 people were killed, wounded or missing. This is said to be the costliest battle ever in American history.
