As the youngest and only female vice-president of the 86-year-old American Institute of Steel Construction, Bobbi Marstellar gets the expected novelty treatment. One recent cringe-worthy declaration: "Woman of Steel Steals the Show in Man's World'' was the headline on a trade article in which Ms. Marstellar was called "loquacious and vivacious.''
Cringes aside, Ms. Marstellar, a structural engineer, also has "a rare combination of competency and charisma,'' says AISC board member Ray Phillips. She's used that combination to help reform an industry notorious for fighting change.
