Common ground and common skies: natural law and ecological responsibility.

Modern and postmodern intellectual traditions have tended to understand the human being through the lens of "culture," "history," and "language," so that the stress falls on cultural and religions differences. The emergence of the ecological sciences, however, reminds us of the urgent need to understand the human also from the lens of "nature" and "species." This lens of ecology correlates in important ways with a number of pre-modern traditions in both Western and Eastern thought that stress the order of nature and natural law. Ecology emphasizes both our common humanity and the need to respect the natural order that sustains life on our planetary home, as did many ancient traditions.
