It's no longer a secret. The Pentagon has selected San Diego-based Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical to build the next generation of American spy planes, a deal with a potential value of $1 billion.
The Department of Defense has awarded Teledyne a $164 million contract to build prototypes of the spy planes, designed to replace the aging fleet of U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird craft.
The economic impact will be immediate. Teledyne plans to hire 50 people, mostly engineers and program managers, to start work June 5, said company spokesman Mark Day.
