LITTLE CREEK IS, as the name implies, a creek.
But it is much more than that. It also is two bodies of salt water filled with crabs, fish, boats and sailing craft that meander through parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
It's a road that links Norfolk's east and west sides. It's an amphibious base in Virginia Beach. It's an elementary school in Norfolk.
The name appears in some of the area's oldest land patents, dating from 1643, when most of South Hampton Roads was known as Norfolk County, according to Peggy Haile-McPhillips , a historian with the Norfolk Public Library.
But why was it named Little Creek? ...
