AN alien species of invading cannibalistic ladybirds has been found in Wakefield.
The harlequin ladybird poses not only a deadly threat to our own native ladybirds but can also bite humans and there have been reports of some houses being infested with tens of thousands of the prolific breeding insects.
Several of the harlequins were found in the St John's area of the city on Saturday morning.
And Elaine Garbett, 41, says she spotted one of them close to her Kettlethorpe home, on Standbridge Lane a week before.
She said: "I just saw it on the front door, and instantly I knew it was different to the ladybirds I have seen before."
