Although it was presumably as a music historian that I was approached to write this review, Song for My Fathers: A New Orleans Story in Black and White is ultimately not about music or its history in New Orleans. To be sure, the story unfolds against the backdrop of Preservation Hall and its black and creole musicians in the heyday (the 1960s) of that venerable jazz venue, but the author's narrative is a personal memoir rather than a musical or historical account of that era.
