The tiny deer tick is famous for giving people Lyme disease.
But its bite also can give people two other illnesses that often feel worse than Lyme and can even be fatal: the malaria-like babesiosis and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis or HGE, a newly recognized disease that causes splitting headaches, high fevers and muscle pain.
Most doctors are used to looking for the diseases one at a time and most think of Lyme first, because it is the most common.
But increasingly researchers are looking at what happens when people get more than one of the diseases, which can all have similar symptoms.
