GOTEBORG, Sweden _ The old order continued to fade away at the World Track and Field Championships Monday, as Jackie Joyner-Kersee withdrew from further competition and left for St. Louis in the company of Bobby Kersee, who is both her coach and husband.
Joyner-Kersee's departure, two days before the start of the heptathlon, came on the heels of her sixth-place finish in the long jump, and followed injury-caused exits by Carl Lewis and Dennis Mitchell.
Nike spokesman Mark Bossardet said that Joyner-Kersee, the world record holder in the heptathlon, has had trouble with her right ankle, which has made it difficult for her to train properly.
