They did not burn their bras, but feminists ignited a global movement.
In a tumultuous year, a demonstration by 100 women on the boardwalk in Atlantic City seemed relatively tame. There were no riots. Some of those protesting the Miss America pageant were briefly arrested for spraying a "noxious liquid," which was actually Toni hair spray (a sponsor of the pageant), but they were free before morning. The women dumped symbols of female oppression -- girdles, steno pads, stilettos -- into a "freedom trash can." Bras went in, too, but none were burned.
