In the words of my mother's late friend, Sarah, a woman known for her inspired cooking: "Find a great recipe and throw lots of money at it."
Recently, during a rare moment of inspiration, I tackled a magazine recipe for Ragu Bolognese. I bought the best ingredients I could find, blocked off an entire afternoon, and set to work dicing onions, carrots, celery and garlic.
I sauteed the veggies in butter and olive oil, then added pork, veal and beef. The house filled with wondrous smells, I began to feel like one of Mario Batali's sous chefs and I thought to myself, "I should cook like this more often."
