THESE are nervous days for Microsoft's shrink-wrappers. As the software giant races to package millions of copies of its long- awaited new operating system, Windows 95, for an August 24th release date, lawyers from America's Justice Department are racing just as quickly to see if they can stop it. Although the department will confirm only that it is conducting an unspecified investigation in the computer industry, it appears to have launched three antitrust probes into Bill Gates's empire. European Union antitrust officials say they are aiding the American investigations, with the possibility of launching their own.
