To my reading this book has two aspects, severally represented by its main title and sub-title, and the first is very much more exciting than the second. This may be because insights into risk have an immediacy which 'modernity theorists' - past or post - do not aspire to.
In any event, this English version of the original (1986) text is less heavy going in Part I, 'The contours of the risk society', than in Parts 2 and 3 which cover 'The individualization of social inequality' and 'Reflexive modernization' in turn. But whether for reasons of language, style or intellectual content, this is nowhere an easy read.
