THE death warrant that sealed the fate of Mary Queen of Scots at a castle near Peterborough is at the centre of a top level rescue bid.
The document, signed by Elizabeth I, condemned Mary to being beheaded at Fotheringhay castle on February 8, 1587 and is intimately associated with one of Britain's most dramatic historical events.
Culture Minister Margaret Hodge has just placed a temporary export bar on the document to prevent it from being sold overseas.
This will provide a last chance to raise the [pounds sterling]72,485.50 needed to keep the rare copy of the Queen's execution warrant in the United Kingdom.
