The recent demolition of a portion of Columbus Hospital not only marks the first visible work on Lincoln Park's biggest condominium development in decades, it also has unveiled a religious site that few knew existed.
The St. Frances Xavier Cabrini National Shrine, once enveloped by Columbus Hospital, was exposed after the southern section of the hospital was knocked down to make room for Lincoln Park 2520, a 325-unit condo development.
The shrine is "kind of a hidden treasure,'' says Chuck Eastwood, chief of staff for Alderman Vi Daley (43rd), whose ward includes the development site. "A lot of people didn't know about ...
