CHICAGO -- Developers of several construction projects for ethanol plants in the Midwest have put them on hold over the last month due to industry risks that may pose a threat to local government revenues generated by ethanol production, officials said at a public finance conference here last week.

At least five ethanol plant projects have been put on hold since October, including one scheduled to be built in Reynolds, Ind.,by VeraSun Energy Corp., one of the country's largest ethanol producers; one proposed by Chippewa Valley Ethanol for Benson, Minn.; and three other plants planned for Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
