Article: Garlic: bad for breath, better for cholesterol.(OVER-THE-COUNTER)

If you want to try garlic to lower your LDL ("bad") cholesterol, the smellier, the better. The odor comes from allicin, the active ingredient in garlic believed to reduce LDL levels. And, since fresh garlic typically contains more allicin, you're better off getting garlic from your diet than dietary supplements, according to Mandy Leonard, R.Ph., Pharm.D., BCPS, manager of the drug information service at Cleveland Clinic.

However, a study published in the Feb. 26 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine concluded that neither fresh garlic nor garlic supplements significantly lowered LDL cholesterol over six months in 192 men and women ages 30 to 65.
