ONE leading animal welfare expert in the U.S. wonders why animal welfare groups aren't more up-in-arms about piglet castration; another feels it should be far down the list of welfare concerns.
"I thought years ago that castration would be a much bigger issue than sow housing," said Dr. John McGlone of the Texas Tech University department of animal science and food technology. "Animal welfare groups started making some hay with sow stalls, got some emotion behind it and it took off."
Piglet castration is a front-burner issue in some European countries. Federal lawmakers in Norway and Switzerland are banning the castration of piglets starting in 2009. ...
