More than a quarter of nurses suffer from insomnia. More than 12% have trouble falling asleep, and a third have difficulty staying asleep, Cupertino, Calif., consulting firm Alertness Solutions reports in a new survey. "To our knowledge, this is the first study to looking at how insomnia in health-care professionals affects their job performance," the company said in a June 12, 2007, news release.

The survey of 2,082 nurses, conducted through the American Organization of Nurse Executives, found that medication errors were more frequent with nurses who experienced difficulty staying asleep--29.67% vs. 18.75% for good sleepers. The difference between nurses with sleeping ...
