Dow Chemical has agreed to an EPA consent order under which it must begin an emergency cleanup of a previously unknown dioxin "hot spot" in the Saginaw River, downstream from its Midland, MI chemical facility. Dredging of dioxin- contaminated sediments must be completed by December 15, EPA says. Preliminary test results found over 1.6 million parts per trillion of dioxin, the highest dioxin concentration ever found in the Great Lakes, in one sample of sediment taken from the Saginaw River on November 9, EPA says.
