FRIENDS and invited guests joined in a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Scarborough Art Gallery.

The town's MP, Robert Goodwill, emulated one of his predecessors, Sir Alex Spearman - who officially opened the building - by cutting a birthday ribbon with the help of the mayor on Saturday.

Mr Goodwill said: "I am really honoured to join the mayor in cutting the ribbon it's a nice touch that they invited the current MP to repeat the task."

He added the gallery was an important part of the town's cultural heritage. "The theatre, arts and artistic education are all part of the heritage," he said. "Scarborough has ...
