Widad lives in a suburb of West Jerusalem called Selwan. A longtime resident of the area, this Christian Palestinian has a sister in New Jersey and other relatives in towns across the West Bank, Jordan and Kuwait.

Years ago, Widad and her husband decided they would stay in their homeland, despite the strife and difficulties. As residents of Jerusalem, they felt protected from the worst abuses of the military occupation of Palestinian territories.

"Our blue ID cards allowed us to move easily and to secure work inside Israel," she explained. But today, as Jerusalem increasingly becomes part of Israel, this freedom is coming to an end, she said.
