The Zippo lighter was invented by George G. Blaisdell in 1932 (he was subsequently nicknamed Mr. Zippo). The name was derived from the word "zipper", the sound of which Mr. Blaisdell liked. It cost $1.95 back then.

These days, Zippo manufactures 80,000 lighters a day at its factory in Bradford, Pa., 12 million lighters a year, and more than 300 million windproof lighters since 1932. That's a lot of lighters, and most of them are probably less expensive than the subjects of this column, Zippo's 1995 Limited Edition "Mysteries of the Forest"[TM] collection (see photos at top right, top left, and bottom).
