It was a sunny Saturday afternoon in post-war Germany and the 49th Division had just arrived in Bottrop where they were to be stationed for the next few months.
A group of soldiers were making their way to the canteen when they passed an attractive young blonde walking in the opposite direction with her mother.
"Hello Blondie," a young Archie Muirden called across the street, spurred on by his comrades.
"Hello Blackie," came the reply from the girl's mother, smiling as she gestured at the soldier's dark glengarry.
