Black Music Month opened on a downbeat earlier this month, with a report from the International Association of African American Music that black music was ``in crisis,'' dominated by ``cookie-cutter'' hits and lacking dynamic new acts.
As June and Black Music Month come to a close, check out the Billboard magazine charts. African-American acts held 16 of the top 20 positions in last week's Hot 100 Singles list. Two of the other four top hits are from groups with black and white members _ Hootie & the Blowfish and Blessid Union of Souls.
